About Förka

The first and only biogas plant in the Faroe Islands was established in 2020. Förka is owned by Bakkafrost, and specializing in the production of biogas and fertilizer. With a focus on sustainability, Förka harnesses the power of biomaterial derived from Bakkafrost's hatcheries and farming facilities, as well as manure collected from the Faroe Islands' farming industry. The biogas generated through this process is efficiently converted into both electricity and heat.

The electricity generated by Förka is seamlessly integrated into the Faroe Islands' national electricity grid, contributing to the region's renewable energy goals. This clean energy source helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promotes a greener and more sustainable energy mix.

Additionally, Förka's production process also generates valuable heat, which is channeled into the district heating grid within the Tórshavn municipality. This district heating system provides a reliable and eco-friendly source of warmth for residential and commercial spaces, further reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy efficiency.

In addition, the biogas plant produces a high quality liquid fertilizer for the faroese agriculture which replacea a large amount of the manure that otherwise would be imported. This increases the farmers' production and reduces enviromental impact on imported goods.

By utilizing waste materials from Bakkafrost's operations and partnering with the farming industry in the Faroes, Förka plays a pivotal role in the circular economy. It effectively transforms organic waste into biogas and fertilizer, mitigating environmental impact and creating valuable resources for local communities.

With its commitment to renewable energy and sustainable practices, Förka exemplifies Bakkafrost's dedication to environmental stewardship and demonstrates the potential for innovative solutions within the biogas industry.
